Many years ago I spent one summer hitchhiking in Canada, from Prince Edward Island on the east coast to Vancouver on the west, on my own for much of the way. Along the way I kept seeing "Last of the Brown Rice Road Runners" chalked on the roadside and it was a name that caught my vegetarian brown rice eating imagination. Who were these brown rice road runners? If the person who chalked the sign was the last, what had happened to the rest of them? Maybe I was actually the last and the person who had chalked that message was in fact the penultimate. I never found out - I never caught up with them, it seemed like they were always two steps ahead of me, but seeing those signs was a comfort to me and made me feel less alone on the road. When I got back to the UK I had a T shirt printed with Last of the Brown Rice Road Runners and the name has stayed with me ever since. So I dedicate my vegan food blog to the Brown Rice Road Runners, whoever you were. Lang may yer lums reek, as we say here in Scotland.
